A Study on the Historical Geography of EastSea

 1. Research Objects on the East Sea Naming.

The subject of East Sea naming is a field that requires a persistent and vigorous research on the mutual relationships among world nations.  In view of this fact, it could be said that the objects of the East Sea research should cover a wide range of areas.  It can also be viewed that the range of research and contemplation should cover the study on the history of map, in relation to the integrated spheres of historical geography and politics, economics, societies, cultures as well as technology from the global point of view.  Accordingly, this research aims to clarify the meaning of historical, geographic changes in the study of East Sea naming and anyhow examine how the changes occurred.     The purpose of this research is to provide fundamental data on East Sea naming through an accurate analysis of the various issues regarding the East Sea naming.  Herewith the purpose, this paper will present an investigative analysis methodology in examining the historical, geographic naming of the East Sea.
In this paper, the viewpoint of its method was intended and intensively set as follows.  Historical and geographic research enables macroscopic research in cartographic, corporeal, theoretical, and practical dimensions.  This field also calls for pluralistic methodological view which enables investigative research on cartography and international relations.  This research adopted a method which analyses corporeal, historical characteristics of the East Sea naming in world maps, focusing primarily on the history of map.
On top of this, the history since the 13th century, when the East Sea first appeared in world maps, was divided up into centuries for convenience.  Each century was examined and analysed to study the process of transitions in the East Sea naming.
Through this research process of clarifying historical facts on East Sea naming and presentation of a new naming model, and thus, by developing the ability to historically and geographically analyse the East Sea naming, this paper is expected to contribute to the theoretical development in this area.
